A devastating collision on Interstate 88 in Kane County claimed one life and severely injured another early Monday morning. According to ABC7 Chicago, a vehicle was barreling down the wrong way in the eastbound lane when it collided head-on with an oncoming car, engulfing both in flames shortly after 5 a.m. near milepost 103.
Tragically, the driver going against traffic was declared dead at the scene, while the other motorist was rushed to the hospital with injuries described as life-threatening, dense fog blanketed the area possibly complicating travel, the visibility was reportedly less than a mile but it remains unclear if the reduced visibility contributed to the crash. Illinois State Police diverted eastbound traffic to Peace Road, and although the lanes reopened around 10 a.m., the investigation into the incident continues, what led to the driver's fatal wrong-way turn is yet to be determined.
The inferno created by the collision led to a complete shutdown of all eastbound lanes on a segment of I-88 as confirmed by the Illinois State Police and reported by NBC Chicago. The westbound direction of the highway thankfully remained open, while first responders attended to the emergency traffic was rerouted.
